Fractional product & technology leadership

Product leadership that builds, ships, and hands over.

We take founding teams and scale-ups from a promising idea to a system that ships reliably: the architecture, the deployment pipeline, and the operating rhythm that keeps it moving after we leave.

Typically engaged two days a week, alongside your existing team.

What we do

Four areas, one seat.

Most engagements touch all four. Which one leads depends on where the constraint actually is, and that's rarely where people expect.

  • 01

    Product direction

Deciding what to build and, more importantly, what to stop building. A roadmap your engineers believe and your investors can follow.

    • Discovery, positioning and problem framing
    • Roadmap and prioritisation your team actually uses
    • Success measures that survive contact with reality
  • 02

    Technology & architecture

The shape of the system, chosen for the size you are now and the size you're heading for, without the rewrite in eighteen months.

    • Architecture review and target-state design
    • Build, buy or borrow decisions with the costs made explicit
    • Paying down the technical debt that is actually slowing you
  • 03

    Deployment & platform

Getting work into production predictably. Containerised builds, environments that match, and releases that stop being an event.

    • CI/CD pipelines and release strategy
    • Infrastructure as code, environments and cost control
    • Observability, alerting and a sane on-call rota
  • 04

    Operations & enablement

The rhythm that keeps delivery steady: planning that takes an hour, not a day, and a team that no longer needs us.

    • Delivery cadence, rituals and reporting
    • Hiring plans, interview loops and onboarding
    • Coaching your first product hire into the seat

How it runs

Three phases, and a planned ending.

No discovery phase that swallows a quarter. You should see work in production inside the first fortnight.

  1. 01Week one

    Read the ground

We sit with your team, your codebase and your customers. At the end of the week you get a written assessment: what's working, what will break at the next stage of growth, and what we'd do first.

  2. 02Weeks two to eight

    Build and ship

We hold the Head of Product seat (direction, architecture decisions, deployment work and the delivery rhythm) while your engineers do what they're best at. Work goes to production throughout, not at the end.

  3. 03Ongoing, then gone

    Hand over deliberately

Every engagement is designed to end. Documentation, runbooks and a named successor coached into the role, so the thing that outlasts us is your team's ability to run it.

The aim is never to become load-bearing. If your team can't run it without us, we haven't finished the job.

Questions

The things people ask on the first call.

01Is this consulting, or do you actually do the work?

Both, but weighted heavily to the second. We write code, review pull requests, set up pipelines and run the planning session. Advice that nobody has time to act on isn't worth paying for.

02How much of your week do we get?

Two days a week suits most engagements, on fixed days so your team can plan around them. Some start at three days through an intense build phase and taper. We don't take on so many clients that yours becomes the one we deprioritise.

03Do you work with our existing engineers, or replace them?

Work with them, always. Your engineers know things about your domain that we won't learn in a month. Our job is to give them a clear direction, remove the decisions that are blocking them, and make sure the system they're building will hold.

04What if we already have a technical founder?

That's a common and good starting point. Usually the technical founder is being pulled between building, hiring, fundraising and support. We take the product and platform load so they can pick the one thing only they can do.

05What does it cost?

A day rate, invoiced monthly, with no minimum term after the first month. We'll give you a number on the first call once we know the shape of the work. We'd rather quote accurately than anchor you with a range.

06How do engagements end?

Deliberately. We agree the handover conditions at the start: what has to be documented, what has to be running, who takes the seat. Thirty days' notice either way, and we'd always rather leave early than be kept on out of habit.
